1. About Department :
The Department of Medicine was established in BVUMC&H Sangli in June 2005.
The department has qualified and experienced faculty members as per NMC norms. At present, Prof. Dr. C. G. Chivate is the Head of the Department. Adequate department is having office space as per NMC guideline. Staff pattern of Medicine department is as per NMC Standard. There are five units of medicine. There are total 190 teaching beds allotted to medicine. OPD is managed by respective units as per assigned days. The teaching activities are conducted daily in the OPD as well as in the wards as per distribution of time table.
2.Facilities Available :
All the faculty members of the Department Of Medicine BV(UM)C&H, Sangli, actively participate in national programmes like RNTCP, ART, Covid-19 etc. Department also caters specialty services to the people by providing special clinical- services like – Diabetology, Gastroenterology, Neurology etc.
Following was the pandemic/epidemic managed by department of medicine.
1. In April 2020, dedicated Covid care center was started and managed around 3000 patients which included critical patients with need of ventilator support over 2000 patients were admitted and treated since April 2020 till date.2. In May 2021, in collaboration with ENT and Ophthalmology dept. a separate mucormycosis unit was established and is functioning till date.
3. Adult Covid vaccination was initiated and is functioning till date. So far we have vaccinated around 2000, Govt. Medical College, State & Central Govt. authorities & other actively participating tertiary hospitals. Department actively participated in National , International , & WHO days for awareness of all the strata of society about their health care promotion & prevention of diseases like AIDS, T.B. day , Environmental & Climate week, World Kidney day, World Science day, World Heart day , Diabetic Day etc.
We also have separate ART unit supported by NACO, in which patients screening, counseling and treatment is provided.

Department is organizing guest lectures on common topics and burning issues of healthcare management. Various awareness programs are arranged for the common people & for medical & paramedical staff. Following eminent personalities addressed our students and faculties on various issues.

The Medicine department is also supported by the Blood bank (Includes Plasma therapy in Covid patients) & Radio imaging and interventional radiology with their ultramodern equipment. The medicine dept. has a daily OPD of around 232 new patients & 147 old patients. On average, annual indoor admissions are 7115 cases & average daily bed occupancy of 72 to 75%. The Medicine dept. provides UG course for 150 admissions & prescribes the syllabus & curriculum as planned by Bharati Vidyapeeth University, Pune. It is as per the proposed syllabus by NMC. Teaching staffs are conducting the clinics, lectures and demos as per the Master time table prepared & distributed by the Prof. & HOD. They are advised to use modern teaching technology like audiovisual aids, Internet etc. Student assessment is done at the end of every clinical posting & the internal assessment marks are allotted as prescribed in the University syllabus. Assessment is based on end posting exams & preliminary exam. Faculty members update their knowledge & clinical skills by attending Seminars, Guest Lectures, Workshops & various state level & International conferences. Departmental staff participates actively in the staff research activities, interdepartmental seminars, Death audit meetings, Clinical pathological meetings & internal audit meetings. Department also arranges for seminars & district level conferences.
